Jason, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, bipolar disorder and epilepsy, needed five stitches in his ear after being battered outside a cafe in Leeds.
The 27-year-old said his attacker told him he had “looked at someone funny”.
Jason’s family claim the attacker later visited their home with a larger gang and threatened him again.
The assault left Jason with heavy bruising to his back and a blooded ear.
He said: “I don’t know why they would pick on me. I’ve not done anything to them.
“I was sat down having a sandwich and this lad came towards me with a metal pole, like he’s snapped part of a child’s scooter off.
“He was staring at me and asking why I’d looked at him funny. I said I hadn’t meant to, that’s just how I look. I look at everyone a bit funny.”
Jason continued: “I didn’t want any sort of fight because there were people around and I’m not that sort of person. I was keeping myself to myself.
“Even if I had looked at him, that’s still no reason to attack someone. I wasn’t doing anyone any harm.
“This guy came towards me on a scooter and I thought he was going to run me over. He got off the bike with a pole and used it to attack me.
“He was waving it around like a madman but I was just trying to protect the people around me. I was trying to think of the best way to take it off him.
“I chucked my hoodie at him but he kept swinging it around at me. I tried to grab it but he kept hitting me on the ear with it.
“I was telling him to stop but he wouldn’t.”
West Yorkshire Police have yet to make any arrests.

Jason’s mum Heather Carr said the attack, which happened at 11am on Monday, has left the family distraught.
She said: “Jason wouldn’t hurt a fly. He was just minding his own business and he’s been attacked for no reason.
“Of course you can’t see Jason’s disabilities, but it shouldn’t matter. These lads came to the door and it was terrifying.
“They said he looked them funny but he always says ‘Mum, I look at everyone funny’. That’s just his nature.”
Hundreds of people shared a Facebook post by Jason’s sister, 32-year-old Sammi, who appealed for witnesses to the attack.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We are investigating an assault on a 27-year-old man in Broadway, Hawksworth, which happened shortly after 11am on Monday September 9.
“The victim was attacked by a suspect armed with a metal pole and received a cut to his ear and bruising to his back.
“The suspect left the scene on a motor scooter. The victim was treated at hospital and released later the same day.
“The incident is being investigated as assault occasioning actual bodily harm and enquiries are ongoing.”
